Health and dignity: the decolonial IVE school and sexual rights in Colombia

The body as territory: autonomy and sexual and reproductive rights.

The exercise of sexual and reproductive rights is fundamental for the autonomy, dignity and wellbeing of all people, especially women and people with gestational capacity. In Colombia, despite legal advances, there are still significant barriers to access to comprehensive and timely sexual and reproductive health services with a differential approach. Gender violence and lack of adequate information aggravate this situation.

A decolonial approach to health: the Friends of Unesco's School of EVD

The Friends of Unesco Corporation is addressing this issue through its innovative "Decolonial School of IVE (Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy).". This program goes beyond simple information on abortion; it focuses on awareness-raising and comprehensive training in sexual and reproductive rights from a decolonial perspective, recognizing how historical structures of power and discrimination impact the health of women, particularly Afro-descendant and indigenous women.

Pillars of the decolonial IVE school:

Educational spaces are offered to fully understand sexual and reproductive rights, including the right to voluntary interruption of pregnancy in the Colombian legal framework.

A crucial component is the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, providing tools to identify and address it.

The importance of self-care and collective care as strategies for resilience and well-being is promoted.

The School works actively with public entities of the health system to influence the improvement of services and ensure that they are offered in conditions of quality, respect and without barriers, ensuring the right to sexual and reproductive health.

It advocates for sexual justice that recognizes diversity and the specific needs of all people, fighting discrimination and stigma.

Real impact: towards sexual and reproductive health with dignity

Through the Decolonial School of IVE, Friends of UNESCO is helping more women and pregnant women to know their rights and be able to make informed and autonomous decisions about their bodies and their health. Facilitated dialogues and advocacy work with the health sector are opening pathways for more equitable and respectful access to abortion services..

The decolonial approach also allows interventions to be culturally relevant and responsive to the communities' worldviews.

Our commitment: full rights, lives with dignity

The Friends of Unesco Corporation is committed to the unrestricted defense of sexual and reproductive rights as an essential part of human rights. The Decolonial IVE school is an expression of this commitment, seeking to build a present and a future where all people can live their sexuality and make reproductive decisions in a free, informed and dignified manner.
