Africa in action: women of African descent leading political innovation in Latin America

Forging new paths: the challenge of political participation for women of African descent

For decades, Afro-descendant women in Latin America and the Caribbean have faced systemic barriers that limit their access to and effective participation in the political sphere. Structural racism, sexism and lack of access to networks and resources are just some of the obstacles. However, their resilience and desire for transformation are undeniable. It is in this context that the need arises for innovative spaces that not only denounce these barriers, but also offer concrete tools for change.

Africa: a laboratory for political leadership and innovation

The Friends of UNESCO Corporation, aware of this reality, has promoted Améfrica: a laboratory of political innovation by and for Afro-descendant women in Latin America and the Caribbean. This program is not just a project; it is a vibrant ecosystem where women leaders from diverse regions meet to strengthen their capacities, co-create strategies and weave networks of mutual support.

How does Améfrica work?

The laboratory focuses on:

Capacity building: a Through workshops, mentoring and dialogue spaces, participants acquire tools for effective political advocacy, strategic communication and the construction of agendas with a gender and ethnic-antiracist approach.

Policy innovation: Améfrica promotes the exploration of new ways of doing politics that are more inclusive, representative and responsive to the specific needs of Afro-descendant communities.

Networking: a fundamental pillar is the Tejido Colectivo de Mujeres Negras Afrolatinoamericanas, caribeñas y de la diáspora para la innovación política. This transnational network seeks to be a platform for articulation, solidarity and the construction of common agendas that transcend borders.

Overcoming barriers: the program directly addresses the challenges and barriers faced by black/Afro-descendant women in accessing and participating in politics.

Stories of impact: voices transforming policy

Since its implementation, Améfrica has witnessed how its participants are redefining leadership. Women who previously saw their incursion into formal politics as a distant prospect are now designing campaigns, participating in debates and, most importantly, bringing the voices and needs of their communities to decision-making spaces. The impact is seen in the trust gained, the strategic alliances formed and the growing visibility of a political agenda that puts racial and gender justice at the center.

The future is Afro-feminist and politically innovative.

Améfrica's work is a long-term commitment to a more representative and just democracy. Empowering women of African descent not only benefits their direct communities, but also enriches the political landscape of the entire region with new perspectives, ideas and solutions.

The Friends of UNESCO Corporation reaffirms its commitment to this program, convinced that profound social transformation necessarily involves strengthening the leadership of those who have been historically excluded.
