The challenge of growing up in the midst of adversity: youth in Northern Cauca
Afro-descendant youth in regions such as Norte del Cauca, Colombia, face complex challenges. Persistent armed conflict, the presence of armed actors and a lack of opportunities can make children, adolescents and youth particularly vulnerable to forced recruitment and other forms of violence. However, in the midst of this adversity, a vital force emerges: the desire of these young people to protect their communities and build a different future.
The Friends of UNESCO Corporation, through its School of Ethnic-Territorial Management for Afro-descendant Youth, is committed to the empowerment of these youth.
Building safe environments: a key initiative
Within the School, the following initiative stands out "Building safe environments for children, adolescents and youth of Afronortecaucanas".. This process focuses on:
- Recruitment prevention: Provide tools and knowledge to youth, their families and communities to identify risks and prevent recruitment and other forms of violence.
- Ethno-education and identity strengthening: Recognizing the importance of culture and identity as protective factors, the initiative promotes ethno-education and pride in Afro-descendant roots. This strengthens their resilience and sense of belonging.
- Culture of peace and coexistence: Spaces for dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution and the construction of a culture of peace from the community base are encouraged.
- Youth leadership: Youth are empowered to lead projects and initiatives that promote safety and well-being in their own environments.
Inspiring young people: weaving safety nets
The results of "Building Safe Environments" are already being felt. Young people participating in the School are not only more aware of the risks, but are actively involved in creating early warning networks and promoting cultural and sports activities that offer positive alternatives to violence. They are demonstrating that, with the right support, youth are the main force for transformation and building lasting peace in their territories.
Investing in the youth is investing in the future of peace.
Corporación Amigos de la UNESCO firmly believes that the road to sustainable peace in Colombia is through the empowerment of its youth, especially those in the most vulnerable contexts. The Ethnic-Territorial Management School is an example of how education, cultural strengthening and youth leadership can generate significant changes.
